Winter

In my dreams, beneath the lengthening shadows of the Never Summer Mountains, a bitter wind sweeps down from the glacier, swallowing an alpine village in her icy mist. From arctic slumber, Yepa beckons, and deep within the fortress of solitude, her call has been heard.

The sundrenched memory of golden leaves fluttering in the playful breeze of Indian summer fades, and the warm blanket of autumn departs as abruptly as a remorseful lover at sunrise. This time, there can be no mistake; winter has arrived in the High Country.

Shortened days and bitter cold now demand a newfound clarity of purpose, a purpose as difficult to walk as a razor’s edge. With no signposts to mark the path, many a snow-blind friend will lose his way. But just as the strongest steel must endure the hottest flame, life’s struggle against winter’s fury will shape our destiny, and in the end, it is the struggle that will define who we truly are.

Beneath the snowdrifts along the road less traveled by lies a joyful epiphany. Revealed by the first rays of morning sun on a new fallen snow, future memories of spring awaken. And from within the fortress of solitude, a heart stirs and Yepa’s mournful call is answered… life will persevere.

Such it is in dreams.
